Open to Aspiring Chess Players grades 4 to 12 and limited to the first 100 entries, this fun chess tournament offers trophies to the top performers (up to 20 places, based upon registration; trophies to players scoring 2.5 or higher out of 4 rounds). Other prizes provided by Sunrise Center for Excellence in Chess and local merchants. 

Our event is open to all students grades 4 to 12 attending school (public, charter, private, religious or registered in homeschool) in Broward County, Florida. This tournament follows USCF rules but is not rated by the Federation; all participants will earn Sunrise Chess Ratings points. 

Format: Game/30, delay 5 if clocks are used. Notation is required but clocks are not. TDs may place a clock on games that are running up against the time control.

Advance Registration Only. Check-in begins at 8:30 am. First round begins at 9:00 pm. Registration closes on February 23 at 5 pm.

This event is not affiliated with BCPS. The tournament is free thanks to the support of our sponsor: The City of Sunrise.

Instructor Maurice Thompson returns to the African American Research Library & Cultural Center with an almost-regular series of chess classes for students in grades 3 and up. Classes take place in Seminar Room #2. Please note, because AARLCC does so much programming, we could only get class space for very specific dates. The class times are:

Saturday, March 3 from 3 to 5 PM

Saturday, March 24 from 3:15 to 5 PM

Saturday, April 14 from 2 to 4:15 PM

and

Saturday, April 28 from 3:30 to 5 PM

More dates will be added soon.

OUR LEVEL 1 WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS, PARENT VOLUNTEERS AND YOUTH MENTORS – Now offered over 2 evenings!

Instructor: Robert McKenzie

Even if you’ve never played chess, this one-day workshop (now offered over 2 evenings) will prepare you to teach a chess program at your school or community program. The workshop covers key topics for a 12+week program of chess instruction, across all grade levels.

The workshop includes NSCF’s curriculum outline, referral to grade appropriate curriculum resources, and on-going training online (individual accounts set-up instructions are supplied with your workshop materials).

By registering for March 17, you are automatically registered for Part B of this class on Tuesday, March 24; same time and location details.

Normally $250, this class is generously sponsored by the City of Sunrise and the Broward Education Foundation.
