A FREE Community Event for the Entire Family – International Master-elect Joshua Colas will visit our Sunrise Open Play Saturday morning from 10 am till 1 pm at the Sunrise Civic Center.
Joshua Colas is the son of Haitian immigtrants who learned to play chess from his dad when he was 7. He grew up in White Plains NY. In his early years, Josh played in lots of our NSCF* tournaments as he worked his way to become the youngest ever African American to achieve the rank of National Master which he accomplished at the age of 12. Joshua has represented Team USA in World Youth Chess Championships from Greece to Brazil. He won the coveted New York City High School Chess Championships. Along with winning 6 national championships, Joshua has been named to the All-American Scholastic Chess Team every year since 2009. Today Josh continues to excel with his chess and has achieved the rank of International Master-elect. He is on a full scholarship studying business administration at Webster University in St. Louis, where he plays on the most successful college chess team in US history. (His coach is Grandmaster Susan Polgar.)
